Abstract

This paper is a systematic literature review on the relevance of passive filtering on eliminating harmonic distortion in distribution networks by optimal use and sizing of single-tuned passive filters (STPFs). The review explains how competing goals of power quality augmentation, loss reduction and cost minimization are balanced in the multi-objective optimization models through a critical analysis of the models. The key findings indicate that properly selected and designed STPFs are important to minimize the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and Current Harmonic Distortion (CHD) and at the same time enhance the voltage profiles and minimize power losses. These conclusions can be supported by simulations on IEEE standard test feeders, specifically the IEEE 33-bus system, and by empirical research of real distribution networks. The results have verified that the optimization-oriented filter allocation planning is much better than the traditional methods with significant power quality improvement under operating conditions.
